Commonly asked questions about skin checks and Skinspect
Full Body Skin Checks are booked for 45 minutes and this is generally enough time to perform a full head-to-toe skin check and provide education. It depends on how many moles and spots you have. People with sun-damaged skin may also take a bit longer.
You will be given a verbal report during the appointment. Within 1-3 days after your appointment, you will receive a link to activate your Dermengine account where you can see your report and all your images.
You will be referred to your GP for any lesions which require further examination and/or treatment. Should you require a Plastic Surgeon we can refer you to one of the Specialists with whom we work closely.
Long hair should be tied up and makeup removed if possible.
Nail polish should preferably be removed but this is not essential.
Please do not apply any fake tan products to your skin for a few days prior to your appointment.
You will be asked to undress to your underwear and be given a gown to wear. Your skin will then be checked section by section so you will not be asked to be totally undressed at any time. Your comfort and modesty is most important to us.
Yes, please arrive 5-10 minutes early as there is a patient form that needs to be filled out.
No, a referral is not necessary for a skin check at Skinspect.
We can do a skin check with tattoos although it may take a little more time. Using our advanced imaging equipment and software we should be able to do a thorough check.
Yes, you are welcome to bring a support person.
An annual Skin Check is advised. Individuals with a high risk of developing skin cancer or those with a high number of atypical moles may be advised to have more frequent checks.
A self skin check should also be done every 3 months.
Around 60% of melanomas are new which means they don’t evolve from an existing mole, so early detection is important and could be life saving.
Our skin cancer clinic is located in Botany but a lot of our patients are from the wider East Auckland, South Auckland and Central Auckland areas including Beachlands, Papakura, Remuera, and Pukekohe.
For workplace skin checks we can travel nationwide depending on the number of staff.
Health Insurance companies have different policies and some regard Skin checks as preventative and therefore do not cover the cost, although you should call to enquire. However, if you require surgery this will usually be covered, depending on what level of cover you have.
Firstly, we are a small, local business that does not have expensive overheads such as call centres and a head office.
Secondly, we believe Skin Checks should be affordable to all New Zealanders.
