What to Expect at Your Skin Cancer Check

Understanding the Importance of a Skin Cancer Check

New Zealand has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, making regular skin checks essential for early detection. A professional skin cancer check helps identify suspicious moles or lesions before they become a serious concern.

How to Prepare for Your Skin Cancer Check

Before your appointment, there are a few simple steps to ensure a smooth and effective check:

  • Avoid wearing makeup, fake tan or nail polish as these can hide lesions
  • Arrive 5-10mins early to allow time to fill in any necessary paperwork
  • Be ready to discuss any changes, family history or previous skin concerns
  • Check out our FAQ page for other common questions

What Happens During a Skin Cancer Check?

A skin cancer check is a straightforward, non-invasive process. Here’s what you can expect:

1. Consultation and Medical History:

After you have completed tthe paperwork, your dermoscopist will ask about any concerns, changes in your skin or family history of skin cancer.

2. Full Body Skin Check:

You will be asked to undress to your underwear and be given a gown to wear. At Skinspect, your skin will be checked section by section so you will not be asked to be totally undressed at any time. Your comfort and modesty is most important to us.
Using a dermatoscope (an advanced magnifying tool with light), the dermoscopist will inspect your skin.

3. Digital Imaging:

As the dermoscopist checks your skin, they will take high-resolution, magnified images of any lesions that look suspicious or that need to be monitored over time.

4. Discussion and Next Steps:

Your dermoscopist will explain findings and recommend follow-up steps (if required).
Skinspect provides a digital report and access to your images via an app after your appointment.

Why Early Detection Matters

Catching skin cancer early significantly increases treatment success rates. Melanoma, the deadliest type of skin cancer, can spread quickly if left untreated. Regular checks allow for early intervention, improving outcomes.
